No tone when dialling up

When my modem attempts to dial up, my ISP's setup program fails. I received an error message saying 'There is no dialling tone'. Could you help me?

Assuming your modem is connected to the phone socket and the cable isn't faulty, then it's more than likely that the modem simply doesn't recognise the dialling tone. This can happen if you are connecting to your ISP using an office exchange, or if you have certain options on your phone line such as BT Call Minder, which uses an intermittent dialling tone to let you know when you you have voicemail messages.

The solution is to configure your modem so that it doesn't listen for a dialling tone. To do this, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Select Device Manager and open the entry for Modems. Select your modem and click Properties. Click on the Connection tab. Under Call Preferences, clear the checkbox that's captioned: 'Wait for dial tone before dialling.' Close the properties dialog boxes by clicking ok. You should now be able to complete the ISP setup.
